In 2018, the Texas Education Agency created a program of study for high school students to study cybersecurity. At the time, there were 80,000 cybersecurity related vacancies in Texas. To address the demand for talent, a cyber professor/incident responder partnered with a business executive to launch the development of relevant training for K12 students. In need of a quality cybersecurity curriculum, Sari McCoy, a Career & Technical Executive Director, partnered with the two to build a comprehensive instructional resource that is leading in cybersecurity K12 education.
A listening tour of school districts around the state of Texas revealed multiple challenges to implementing a cybersecurity program of study. These barriers include:
Not being able to find a cyber expert to teach
Not having the funds to build a SOC
Curriculum that is quickly outdated
Curriculum that doesn’t prepare students for a career
A lack of work-based learning opportunities
Dr. McCoy and her partners developed a curriculum that addresses the challenges encountered by school districts while providing students with access to a high-wage, high-skilled career training.
Today, Cyber Workforce provides training for cybersecurity careers to K12, college, and adult learners. Our training equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to challenge industry-based certification exams and to be work-ready for a cyber career.
